Studio Assistant (Full-time, Summer)

Term: May 13, 2024 – August 30, 2024, dependent on funding
Location: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, Calgary
Reporting to: Studio Manager and Recording Engineer

About this position

The Studio Assistant will assist NMC’s expert recording engineers and electronics technician to facilitate recording sessions and maintain the Living Collection of instruments and recording equipment. During this termed position, the Studio Assistant will gain experience with the care and use of NMC’s Living Collection of instruments and recording studio infrastructure. The Studio Assistant will also develop basic electronic troubleshooting and maintenance skills while caring for historic instruments and recording equipment.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Set up and strike recording studio and assist NMC studio staff during recording sessions
  • Assist with VIP Tours of the recording facilities
  • Ensure proper care, handling and usage tracking of historic instruments and recording equipment
  • Create fault reports to assist technician with repairs

Qualifications

  • Experience with audio production, sound engineering, analog electronics and a recording studio environment is considered an asset
  • A motivated self-learner who keeps up to date with emerging technologies, equipment and procedures
  • Positive attitude, good listener, strong communications skills, sensitive to artistic processes and personalities
  • Highly attentive to detail, excellent time management and ability to meet goals on schedule
  • Able to function effectively both when working independently and in a fast-paced and active team setting
  • Able to work a flexible shift schedule, able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • The candidate must be returning to full-time studies in September 2024
