Join NMC and JazzYYC for an intimate evening with GRAMMY and JUNO Award-winner Alex Cuba, singing and playing solo — a chance to experience his artistry up close and personal.
Alex Cuba is a GRAMMY and JUNO Award–winning singer, songwriter, producer, and musician. Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, and now based in Smithers, BC, he brings a sound that blends tradition with global influences in articulate arrangements, conveying emotion through melody and lyric.
His musical journey began at age four, playing claves on national television alongside his father. After years of studying guitar, then electric and upright bass, he toured and recorded nationally and internationally before moving to Canada in 1999. Over his career, Alex has released nine albums and earned more than 20 major awards and nominations. In 2022, he won the GRAMMY for Best Latin Pop Album for Mendó, an achievement he proudly claims as producer, artist, and engineer.
Driven by curiosity and artistry, Alex’s evolution has always been about searching for simplicity and soul in Cuban music—breaking down complex arrangements, blending them with North American influences, and drawing inspiration from Cuban folk traditions. The result is music that is always fresh, always creative, and always deeply human.
Renowned for blending Cuban roots with North American pop, soul, and folk influences, his music transcends language barriers, creating an emotional connection with audiences everywhere.
“I always believed, from the beginning of my career in Canada, that if music is beautiful, it will cross the language. Because we are all humans.” – Alex Cuba
