Join us for a special Halloween-themed demonstration of the National Music Centre's 1924 Kimball Theatre Organ.
Be bewitched by the organ's ghoulish and ghastly sounds! This monstrosity of an instrument was once used to create sound effects and music for silent films. Stitched together from hundreds of pipes, drums, and chimes, this 100-year-old organ now rests in the heart of the National Music Centre. On Halloween, this instrument will be reanimated to accompany clips from classic silent horror films and cartoons. Learn about the art of early cinema as you watch movie monsters stalk across the silver screen.
Wavering, ghostly choirs. Droning bass. Ominous bells. Creeping percussion. All these haunting sounds and more will be used to great effect as you experience horror straight from the earliest days of movie magic.
Please note that we will be using clips from classic horror films that could be frightening to younger viewers. This drop-in demonstration is twenty minutes in length and repeats four times throughout the day.
Backbeat weekend programming is supported by CIBC.
