National Music Centre Celebrates Black Music Month with Free Voices of Canada Event Curated by Master T

Master T-curated event to feature music, dance, spoken word and vendor market spotlighting Calgary’s Black creative community

(Calgary, AB — May 19, 2026) The National Music Centre (NMC) will present a special Black Music Month edition of its Voices of Canada education series on Saturday, June 6. The event is curated by MuchMusic legend Master T, and admission to Studio Bell will be free for everyone all day.

The Voices of Canada series uses music to explore and celebrate Canada's rich cultural heritage. Through live performances and panel discussions, audiences can connect with the stories and songs of Canadian musicians from diverse backgrounds, gaining a deeper understanding of the nation’s cultural fabric.

Hosted by NMC’s Rebecca Bukasa, the event will feature performances and panel conversations with spoken word artist Priscille Bukasa, who draws inspiration from her roots in the Democratic Republic of Congo; UK-born, Calgary-based singer-songwriter Kindé, whose music blends R&B, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and gospel influences; songwriter, music arranger, and orchestrator King Udofia, known for his Afro-Jazz project Gbèdu; rapper RTC Profit; hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeats, and dancehall DJ Badgyal; and emerging keyboardist and music director ND.

Also joining the panel portion is Cindy Ansah, founder and artistic director for NAPPY Dance Collective. Founded by Ansah and Tiara Matusin, the all-Black contemporary dance collective is dedicated to nurturing the pursuits of Black creatives. As part of the day’s program, the collective will screen a short documentary highlighting their work and impact.

On the main floor of Studio Bell, Alcove Centre for the Arts will lead hands-on activities for kids and families, and a Black Music Month Market will highlight offerings from Calgary’s Black creative community, from artisans to music industry representatives and recording studio connections.

“Black Music Month is a celebration of the many Black communities that make up Canada’s cultural mosaic,” said Master T. “I’m honoured to curate this event that represents the vibrancy of Black culture in Calgary. We hope everyone can make it out to this free event. There’s going to be so much talent and inspiration under one roof.”
