Inaugural Calgary Women’s Jazz Orchestra with Christine and Ingrid Jensen

The Calgary Women’s Jazz Orchestra, along with special guests Christine and Ingrid Jensen and a rhythm section comprised of Tyler Hornby (drums), Kristian Alexandrov (piano), and Aretha Tillotson (bass), will be performing at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, on January 28 in celebration of women in jazz.

Women Band Directors International (WBDI) has been supporting and encouraging women in the USA for over 50 years, but the Alberta Chapter is a new venture for our province. Seeing the need to inspire and strengthen young self-identified females to continue playing jazz from their earliest beginnings in junior high through adulthood, this Girls in Jazz event was born.

Kathie Van Lare, a freelance trumpet player, and high school/community band director, and Sarah Drew, a middle school music teacher, joined forces to create a full day workshop taught by all female staff to focus on improvisation, jazz style, and ensemble playing in a safe environment all while building community with other women. The Calgary Women’s Jazz Orchestra grew out of this vision.
