Statement on COVID-19

Message from Andrew Mosker, President and CEO of National Music Centre

March 25, 2020

Dear friends and family of the National Music Centre (NMC),

Many of us are feeling the devastating effects sweeping through the world and our communities right now, while we work together to flatten the curve and do what we can to stop COVID-19 from spreading. Despite this moment of separation, we’re seeing people gather online from safe locations to keep each other company and offer their support. Music is pouring from balconies, devices and screens as artists share their messages of hope and solidarity — that we will get through this together.

Like many organizations and individuals within the arts and creative industry sectors, and those from different sectors across the country, we’re announcing more postponed or cancelled events for the foreseeable future, depending on how the situation continues to unfold. As a result, Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, will remain temporarily closed to the public until further notice or until it is safe to return for our patrons, audiences, volunteers and our staff.

Regrettably, this news is especially difficult for a charitable organization like NMC, as our earned revenues temporarily cease, our fundraising revenues become further compromised during the city and province’s declared Public Health Emergency, and the economic impacts that continue to affect donors and sponsors. This has resulted in making the very difficult decision to temporarily layoff 77% of NMC’s current full-time and part-time staff and institute a roll-back in wages for the small transitionary team that will remain in place. Those who are eligible will continue to receive their employee benefits for the duration of this temporary period. Like many of our friends in this sector, these layoffs became inevitable in order to ensure a healthy future for our organization, and this news is heartbreaking for all of us.

We find ourselves in very challenging and unprecedented times, but one thing we know for certain is that Studio Bell will reopen eventually, and we will recall NMC staff back to work and our dedicated crew of volunteers when the time is right. NMC’s team is world-class and our culture is strong. I have had the distinct privilege to work alongside this team each and every day to realize the vision of building and operating a home for music in Canada. Together, our achievements and impacts have been significant in little more than three and a half years since we first opened. Our current situation is a setback, but it is only temporary and the health and safety of our community as a whole is now our collective first priority — so please stay home!

We have always believed that music heals. Thus, for the duration of this global crisis we’ll continue to tell the story of music in Canada and bring people together in a different way. We’ll keep amplifying the love, sharing, and understanding of music and remain focused on its power to positively move our community forward.

We want to thank everyone who has reached out these past few weeks with your messages of support and those of you who have generously offered donations in favour of refunding your tickets. We can’t thank you enough for this. Your decision to show your support in such a time of need is heartwarming and means everything to us right now and always.

For others who are interested, you can continue to support NMC in one of the following ways:

  • Purchase or renew an NMC Membership or as a gift to friends or family.
  • If an event was postponed and you can’t make it on the rescheduled date, consider donating your refund back to NMC.
  • Pre-purchase your ticket to an upcoming concert or event now or buy tickets as a gift for someone else.
  • Consider leaving a one-time donation or become a monthly donor.
  • Book your future meeting, event or corporate party at Studio Bell.

Please remember, by supporting NMC charitable efforts, you are helping to support music in Canada. Over the past few days, several other opportunities have popped up for supporting Canadian artists, so please consider helping the extraordinary talent that NMC has and continues to nurture, as well.

We will get through this together, so please stay positive, supportive, and keep sharing your powerful messages of love and hope however you can. We’ll see you all soon and look forward to welcoming you back to Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre.

Stay safe,

Andrew Mosker
