About the Position

The National Music Centre (NMC) collection is held in trust for the public; it consists of primarily cultural (human- made) objects and intellectual property related to music in Canada to be used for the exclusive purposes of preservation, restoration, use, presentation to the public, and research. The Manager, Collections and Exhibition Development will be an integral member of the Collections and Exhibitions team.

The Manager of Collections and Exhibition Development will oversee the documentation, care and presentation of artifact collections owned and borrowed by NMC. During this 18 month contract, the Manager will assist the Director of Collections & Exhibitions with the project management and content development of a series of exhibits, including but not limited to: coordinating artifact loans, liasing with internal exhibit teams and external contractors, content development, copy editing and managing timelines and staff.

Ideal candidates will possess a general working knowledge of accepted museum/gallery standards in regard to Collections Management and posses creative writing skills for exhibition content development and dissemination. This role involves and requires superior writing and communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing stewardship and integrity of NMC’s Collections, exhibitions content, interactives, and resources
  • Exhibitions development including managing external contractors and timelines
  • Assisting with exhibit content development, including collections research and copy editing
  • Liasing with donors and lenders
  • Producing, organizing and maintaining paper and digital collection records, including gift and loan agreements
  • Coordinating the shipping/receiving of donations and loans
  • Managing existing content for galleries and interactives, including licenses and digital assets
  • Liaising with Technical & IT/AV staff for maintenance and repairs of exhibition interatives
  • Managing, instructing, scheduling, and supervising a small group of employees and volunteers
  • Maintaining a safe, orderly and collegial work environment

Qualifications

  • Post secondary training in museum collections management, exhibit design/development, creative writing, journalism or a related field
  • Substantial practical experience in project management
  • Practical experience in museum collections management, preventive conservation and museum shipping and exhibition procedures
  • Adaptable, flexible and functions effectively in a fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Able to set and achieve goals, producing quality results on time
  • Experience leading staff, interns, volunteers and contractors

Preferred Skill Set
The successful candidate will have the appropriate qualifications, knowledge, skills and personal attributes to perform the necessary tasks and responsibilities required on a day-to-day basis, including:

  • Bilingual, English and French
  • 2 – 5 years relevant experience managing collections and exhibitions
  • A passion for music and storytelling
  • Familiarity and appreciation of Canadian music
  • Willingness to experiment with innovative ways of engaging visitors
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and external partners
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Critical thinker
  • Have superior writing and communication skills, including copy editing, donor/lender relations and public speaking
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends as needed
