The Power of the Playlist is the National Music Centre's new playlist creation drop-in program facilitated by Jennifer Buchanan, founder of JB Music Therapy, and generously supported by Bell.

Track 6: Power Playlists to Regulate Your Mood

Music is often referred to as a universal language, but it is really more of a universal art form with the capacity to evoke powerful emotions that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries. Listening to a favorite song triggers a common pattern of brain activity, regardless of genre. That may explain why different people describe similar emotions and memory responses when listening to their favorite piece of music. Your preferences are your greatest triggers to snap you into the mood you want to be in. Marketing research has really taken this to heart. Companies spend huge amounts of time and money learning what kind of music (or no music at all) will most effectively draw customers to their retail outlets and advertisements.

In this session you will learn:

  • the best exercise for using the right music at the right time to regulate your mood.
  • if listening to sad music is bad.
  • how to recognize a trigger or an anchor song - and how to use both to shape your mood.
