Collections & Exhibitions Technician

About this Position
The National Music Centre (NMC) collection is held in trust for the public; it consists of primarily cultural (human- made) objects and intellectual property related to music in Canada to be used for the exclusive purposes of preservation, restoration, use, presentation to the public, and research. The Collections & Exhibitions Technician will be an integral member of the Collections and Exhibitions team.
The Collections & Exhibitions Technician will assist with monitoring of collections and exhibition spaces, and assist in the maintenance, repair and refurbishment of exhibits including their related interactives and audio-visual equipment. The Collections & Exhibitions Technician will be responsible for some elements of exhibit construction and installation and possess a general working knowledge of accepted museum/gallery standards with regard to exhibit maintenance, materials, construction, use of tools and equipment.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining permanent and temporary exhibitions
- Utilize mechanical drawings, schematics, and product manuals towards maintenance and repair of exhibit components
- Adjust and maintain lighting for exhibits to acceptable lumen requirements set forth by the Conservation staff
- Keep up to date maintenance records and supply inventories
- Construct and finish exhibit elements, including woodwork, metalwork and painting
- Facilitate the set-up and tear-down of temporary/traveling exhibits and displays while ensuring safety of artifacts
- Assist with monitoring collections on exhibit
- Maintain Woodshop and Workshop tools and machinery
- Maintain a safe and orderly workspace
- Assist with other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Post-secondary training in the field of carpentry and/or equivalent experience
- Post-secondary training and/or practical experience in museums, theater design or musical instrument repair an asset
- Must be comfortable working with a wide variety of power tools and workshop equipment: table saw, skill saw, pneumatic tools, router, etc.
- Be adaptable, flexible and function effectively in a team environment
- Be capable of taking initiative with a positive attitude
- Be able to set and achieve goals
- Have effective written and oral communication skills
- Be available some evenings and weekends
