Location: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, Calgary

About this Position
The Café Barista and Retail Shift Lead is a part-time position responsible for providing a positive, consistent, and professional customer service and sales experience to customers of the NMC Gift Shop and Café. The Shift Lead is tasked with understanding both the food and beverage offerings as well as the products within the retail side of the NMC Gift Shop. Their primary duties will focus on the café side of the shop; however, retail assistance may be required from time to time. The café within the NMC Gift Shop is a start up café, with goals to expand over time. The Shift Lead stays current on all coffee and tea industry trends, employing this knowledge while providing a high level of customer service to guests in the space. They are also responsible for educating customers about our premium coffee and tea and culinary menu that our Café offers. In addition, the Shift Lead will act as floor manager when needed to ensure that all procedures and protocols are being met. This position fulfills any other duties that the Visitor Experience Manager or Retail Coordinator assigns and represents the brand in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as floor manager while on duty including the oversight of café barista and sale associate when needed
  • Welcoming customers and helping to determine their coffee interest and need
  • Preparing and selling a wide variety of food items and beverages, following prescribed recipes and preparations techniques for coffee and tea drinks
  • Taking inventory and replenishing items throughout the café when needed
  • Cleaning and restocking behind bar and café area, emptying trash and sanitizing equipment and dishes when needed; always maintaining a clean and safe work environment, adhering to safety and sanitation policies
  • Assisting in the sale of retail items, including keeping a keen understanding of the newest products and offerings
  • Keeping equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs
  • Ensuring that all food products are handled, stored, prepared and served safely
  • Adhering to all food safety regulations and quality controls
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment, adhering to safety and sanitation policies
  • Managing opening and closing cash procedures and daily cash reconciliation
  • Other tasks as required 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in customer service, barista and/or retail
  • Experience with POS systems
  • Proven safe and accurate cash handling experience
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English
  • Eye for detail and precision, in addition to the desire to create a unique and memorable experience for guests
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of visitors
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings
  • Proven ability to take initiative and be self-motivated
  • Embodies a positive attitude, solution oriented, and customer first mindset
  • French or another second language would be an asset
